$4 Billion in First Year – Expectations High for Missouri Sports Betting

As Missouri prepares to launch its legal sports betting market, projections indicate that the state’s sportsbooks could handle nearly $4 billion in bets during their inaugural year of operation. This anticipated figure is based on a combination of data from various sportsbooks, local economic factors, and insights from other states that have recently introduced legal sports betting.

The Missouri sports betting market is expected to generate approximately $4 billion in total handle within its first full calendar year. This figure translates to an estimated $525 million in operator revenue, alongside over $50 million in tax contributions to the state.

FanDuel and DraftKings are anticipated to dominate the Missouri market, capturing around 75% of the total market share. Their combined future handle could potentially reach $5 billion by 2030, reflecting their strong brand presence and marketing strategies.

Several local factors may influence the overall betting totals and market growth in Missouri. The proximity to states with existing legal sports betting markets, such as Illinois and Kansas, could affect local wagering patterns. Additionally, the performance of local sports teams, particularly the Kansas City Chiefs, may drive interest and engagement among bettors.

Launching the Sportsbooks

Missouri’s mobile sportsbooks are set to launch on December 1, marking the beginning of legal wagering in the state. This launch will feature nine sportsbooks, including major players like BetMGM, Caesars, and FanDuel. The initial excitement surrounding the launch is expected to generate substantial betting activity, particularly during the NFL season, which typically sees high volumes of wagers.

The first month of legal betting in Missouri is projected to yield over $400 million in handle, driven by promotional offers and a full slate of NFL games.

The projections for Missouri’s sports betting market are derived from estimates provided by leading sportsbooks, historical data from other states, and adjustments based on Missouri’s population and income levels. Comparisons with mature markets like Indiana and Tennessee, which have experienced significant growth in their sports betting sectors.

As the market matures, FanDuel has indicated expectations of generating $400 million in annual gross gaming revenue by 2030, assuming a hold percentage of around 15%. Similarly, DraftKings anticipates $175 million in gross gaming revenue, equating to approximately $1.17 billion in annual handle.
