Online Casinos Rise As Spanish Sports Betting Falls

Spanish regulator the La Dirección General de Ordenación del Juego (DGOJ) reported annual figures for online gambling with revenues hitting €850.7 million for 2020. That represents an annual increase of 13.8% from 2019 figures of €748.2 million.
The published annual figures from the regulator showed a fall of 7.1% in sports betting revenues because of the impact of sporting events because of the pandemic and closure of elite sports.
However sports betting remains the biggest revenue generator for online gambling with a total of €365.1 million wagered, but online casinos are catching up sports betting with a rise in revenues of 35.8% for the year to €350.8 million, showing that when sporting events were closed players moved over to online casino games.
In total player spending in online gambling rose to €21.60 billion, up by 15.0% compared to €18.78 billion the previous year.
