Macau Government Offers Tourist Subsidy
Local residents in Macau will be offered $25 to “Stay, Dine and See Macao” by the Macau government. The scheme offers a subsidy to all residents to help promote the local economy as it continues to struggle following the COVID-19 pandemic.
The scheme looks to encourage locals to dine, take part in tours and stay at hotels and will start from the 25th April till the end of the year.
Similar schemes have happened over the last 12 months by other governments, last year the UK government ran a scheme called “eat out to help out” and offered a subsidy of 50% on all meals by local residents in an attempt to boost the hospitality industry.
The Macau government said of the latest initiative: “The project is tailored to support travel industry professionals by creating job opportunities as a form of relief while joining industry operators to invest resources in launching remarkable local tour itineraries, spurring new rises in domestic demand and spending in local communities.”
According to figures released by the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) in Macau tourist figures dropped 21% for the first quarter of 2021 compared to that of last year.
