Bet365, headquartered in Stoke-on-Trent, reported a turnover of £4 billion, a rise from £3.7 billion in the previous year. However, the company’s pre-tax profits fell sharply from £627 million to £349 million. This decline can be attributed to a substantial increase in operational costs as the company restructured its global operations.
Denise Coates, who serves as both the founder and CEO, received a salary of £104 million. As the majority shareholder, she is entitled to a significant portion of the £353.6 million dividend declared by the company, bringing her total remuneration to a minimum of £280 million.
While this represents a considerable increase from the £150 million she earned the previous year, it still falls short of her record payout of £469 million in 2021. Over her career, Coates has amassed over £2.5 billion in pay and dividends from Bet365, a company she famously established from a portable cabin in a car park.
The decline in profits is primarily linked to a £325 million surge in expenses. This increase is largely due to Bet365’s expansion efforts in the United States and South America, coupled with a strategic withdrawal from the Chinese market.
Bet365 has faced ongoing scrutiny regarding its operations in China. Although the company has consistently maintained compliance with local laws, it only ceased accepting bets from Chinese customers at the end of March.
Despite the criticism surrounding her substantial earnings, industry experts often highlight Coates’ straightforward approach to taxation. She does not employ complex structures to minimise her tax liabilities and is recognised as one of the UK’s largest individual taxpayers.
During the financial year, Bet365 also made a contribution of £130 million to the Denise Coates Foundation, which supports various charitable initiatives.
Bet365’s strategic direction has increasingly focused on regulated markets, particularly in the United States, where the company has rapidly expanded its licensed betting services across 16 states, entering five new markets within the year.
As Bet365 continues to navigate the complexities of international markets, its focus on regulated environments positions it well for future growth. The company’s commitment to compliance and responsible gambling practices will be crucial as it seeks to solidify its presence in the competitive landscape.
Recent reports have hinted at exploratory discussions regarding a potential £9 billion sale of the business. However, the latest accounts filed do not confirm these speculations, instead emphasising Bet365’s strategic focus on expanding its operations in regulated markets.
