Betting Giants Reveal Shocking England World Cup Odds as Fan Confidence Drops

England World Cup betting data has revealed a surprising lack of confidence among domestic fans, with major betting operators reporting unexpectedly low support levels. Leading betting giants have disclosed that only a small fraction of English bettors are backing their national team to win the tournament, marking a stark contrast to historical patterns. The most compelling evidence shows England trailing behind several European rivals in both domestic backing and global betting preferences. Portugal, France, and Germany demonstrate significantly stronger patriotic betting behavior, while Spain has emerged as the international favorite despite lower home support.

Betting Giants Reveal England’s Shocking 20% Domestic Support

Entain, the owner of Ladbrokes and Coral, has published data from its Patriotic Punter Index revealing that just one in five English bettors are backing the Three Lions to win the World Cup. The 20% domestic support figure places England firmly mid-table among competing nations, despite Thomas Tuchel’s squad ranking among tournament favorites.

Portugal dominates patriotic betting with 57% of domestic slips placed on their national team. France follows at 29%, while Austria registers 25% and Germany shows 24% home backing. Colombia and Brazil sit at 23% and 21% respectively, all surpassing England’s support levels.

The sentiment proves even more subdued north of the border. Scotland records just 9% of domestic bets backing their team, despite the euphoria surrounding their first World Cup appearance since France 98. Bookmakers price Scotland at 300/1 to lift the trophy.

Cross-border support remains minimal, with only 8% of Scottish bets placed on England to win, while a mere 1% of English slips back Scotland. Tom Ritzema, group trading director at Entain, noted that “football loyalty and betting logic don’t always go hand in hand”. The data covers all bets placed up to and including June 3.

Portugal Leads Patriotic Betting as France and Germany Show Strong Belief

The global betting landscape tells a different story from domestic patriotic patterns. Data from Entain’s international markets shows Spain receives the highest volume of bets across all territories, positioning the Spanish squad as the clear favorite among worldwide punters. France captures second place in global betting stakes, demonstrating strong international confidence coupled with robust home support.

England and Portugal share third position in overall betting stakes across Entain’s global operations. This placement reveals an intriguing dynamic: while Portugal commands overwhelming domestic loyalty, England attracts significant international betting interest despite tepid home backing.

Current odds from major bookmakers reflect these market sentiments. Portugal sits at 9/1, while France holds shorter odds at 11/2. Germany attracts 15/1 backing, and England maintains 8/1 odds. These figures suggest bookmakers view England as a stronger contender than domestic betting patterns indicate.

The disparity between England World Cup betting at home versus international markets highlights a notable confidence gap. Portuguese bettors demonstrate unwavering faith in their national team, meanwhile England’s supporters remain cautious despite favorable odds. France and Germany occupy middle ground, showing balanced domestic belief that aligns more closely with their global betting positions.

Spain Emerges as Global Favorite Despite Lower Domestic Confidence

Spain accounts for 17% of all outright bets across Entain’s global markets, establishing itself as the most backed team for the tournament. France captures 15% of worldwide betting stakes, followed by England and Portugal tied at 11% each. Brazil attracts 9% of global bets, while Argentina and Germany each register 7%. The Netherlands takes 4% and the USA rounds out the top selections with 3%.

The data reveals a striking paradox for Spain. While La Roja dominates international betting preferences, Spanish domestic bettors show remarkably low patriotic support at just 16%. This figure places Spain at the bottom of the patriotic backing table, yet the team maintains overwhelming global appeal. The contrast underscores how international punters view Spanish prospects more favorably than the nation’s own supporters.

Tom Ritzema emphasized this peculiar dynamic, stating that Spain “remains the most popular choice across our markets, showing that when it comes to this World Cup, neutrals and patriots alike are looking beyond national borders for their winner”. The betting patterns demonstrate Spain’s broad appeal combines neutral confidence with steady home support. Particularly notable is how betting England World Cup odds and preferences shift dramatically based on geographic location, with neutral markets showing greater faith in certain squads than domestic audiences display.
