Online platforms dominated Massachusetts sports betting activity during May 2026, accounting for more than 98% of all wagers placed. The state’s sports wagering licensees generated $70.59 million in gross gaming revenue, producing $14.1 million in state tax revenue. The May handle represented a 6.8% decline from April’s $678.4 million in total wagers.
The revenue decrease occurred on account of a softer hold percentage across operators, despite strong participation levels. Category 3 Sports Wagering Licensees, including DraftKings Massachusetts and other mobile operators, face a 20% tax rate on gross sports wagering revenue. Category 1 operators managing retail sportsbooks at casino properties pay 15% on taxable revenue.
Monthly handle figures showed fluctuation throughout early 2026. March recorded just under $700 million in wagers, bringing in $13 million in tax revenue for the state. February generated $76.1 million in revenue from $619.9 million in wagers, with tax revenue exceeding $15.1 million. December 2025 peaked at $845.3 million in sports betting handle, producing $19.6 million in state tax revenue.
Since sports wagering launched in Massachusetts on January 31, 2023 for retail betting and March 10, 2023 for online platforms, the Commonwealth has accumulated approximately $434.3 million in total taxes and assessments.
The Boston-based operator leveraged brand familiarity, local marketing, and a head start in its own backyard to capture more online wagers than its next two competitors combined. DraftKings took 49% of the state’s online handle in May, settling $306.50 million in wagers. This level of concentration at the top stands as unusual for a market with seven live operators.
Brand recognition in its home state turned Massachusetts into one of DraftKings’ strongest markets by share anywhere it operates. The company’s hometown edge has remained steady since the market’s launch in early 2023, maintaining a dominant position that far exceeds typical market share distributions across other states.
Behind DraftKings, FanDuel settled $158.70 million for a 25.4% share of online handle. The gap between first and second position illustrates the competitive moat DraftKings built through local presence and early market positioning. No other operator in the seven-licensee market approached these two national leaders in handle volume during May.
The sustained market concentration reflects how geographic advantages and brand equity translate into tangible competitive results. DraftKings’ Massachusetts performance demonstrates how hometown status creates lasting market advantages that persist across monthly reporting periods, even as seasonal betting patterns shift.
Combined operator control reached 74.4% of Massachusetts online handle, mirroring a pattern that appears nationwide where the two companies command approximately 78% of all sports betting gross gaming revenue. The national distribution, however, follows an inverted hierarchy. FanDuel holds the top position nationally with an estimated 44% market share, while DraftKings maintains 34%. Massachusetts presents an exception to this structure, as DraftKings dominates with nearly double FanDuel’s revenue despite FanDuel’s stronger performance in most other U.S. states.
The remaining five operators competed for less than one-fifth of the market. Fanatics ranked third among Massachusetts operators with $5.80 million in revenue during April 2026, followed by BetMGM at $4.70 million. Caesars captured 5.84% of the Massachusetts sports betting market despite processing $24.00 million in handle.
