The New Zealand government has taken decisive steps to regulate the online betting market more effectively. The amendments to the Racing Industry Act, which will take effect from June 28, 2025, mandate that all companies currently offering online betting services must cease operations immediately. This move effectively designates TAB NZ, the state-owned operator, as the sole legal provider of online betting services in the country.
The primary goal of these legislative changes is to enhance the financial stability of New Zealand’s racing and sports industries. By restricting online betting to TAB NZ, the government aims to ensure that revenue generated from gambling remains within the country, thereby supporting local sports and racing initiatives.
While the new regulations favor TAB NZ and Entain, they also introduce heightened scrutiny of the gambling industry. The amendments empower the government to implement additional regulations aimed at minimizing gambling-related harm and enhancing customer protection.
For Entain, the recent legislative changes represent a significant opportunity to solidify its presence in the New Zealand market. Having operated TAB NZ since May 2023.
Entain has expressed its commitment to promoting responsible gambling practices. Following the Royal Assent of the amendments, the company plans to introduce an enhanced onshore betting experience that includes advanced tools for safer gambling. This initiative aligns with the government’s objectives of protecting consumers and addressing gambling-related issues.
In addition to enhancing the betting experience, Entain has pledged to make a substantial financial contribution to TAB NZ. Upon the implementation of the new regulations, the company intends to provide an additional NZ$100 million to support the state-owned operator.
As the New Zealand government moves to regulate the online betting landscape, it has also issued warnings to consumers regarding the risks associated with offshore betting operators. Vicki Scott, the Director of Gambling at the Department of Internal Affairs, emphasized the importance of compliance with the new laws. She cautioned that engaging with overseas betting providers could expose consumers to significant risks, including inadequate consumer protections and potential financial losses.
