Entain’s inclusion in the FTSE 250 follows a share price drop of approximately 40% over a 12-month period, reducing the company’s market valuation to roughly £3.3 billion. This represents a significant contraction from 2021 levels, when exposure to the rapidly expanding United States sports wagering market attracted a £16 billion takeover approach from DraftKings.
The recent contraction in equity value stems from multiple compounding operational and fiscal factors:
Taxation Increases: In April 2026, the United Kingdom raised the Remote Gaming Duty from 21% to 40%. A further planned increase in General Betting Duty to 25% in April 2027 is projected to impose substantial annual costs prior to mitigation measures.
Regulatory Tightening: Operators across major European jurisdictions, including the Netherlands, France, and Germany, face increasingly stringent compliance framework requirements.
Balance Sheet Liabilities: Expansionary acquisitions over recent years contributed to a doubling of group net debt to £3.6 billion. Additionally, the business concluded a £585 million settlement with UK authorities regarding historical legacy matters in Turkey.
Despite these structural headwinds, operational performance has demonstrated resilience. In the first half of 2026, Entain reported a 7% increase in Net Gaming Revenue to £2.55 billion, supported by solid performance across core international markets.
In response to shareholder demands for cost control and portfolio simplification, Chief Executive Officer Stella David initiated targeted asset sales. In June, the group announced an agreement to sell a 20% stake in its Polish and Croatian business units for up to £366 million, alongside an intention to divest the remaining 48% stake in future phases.
This divestment strategy has focused attention on the group’s overall sum-of-the-parts valuation. Financial analysts at Berenberg estimate Entain’s breakup value at approximately £12 per share, a figure more than double its recent trading level of approximately 520p. The substantial discount between public market equity pricing and individual asset values has driven speculation regarding potential private equity interest, corporate spin-offs, or secondary takeover proposals.
A central component of this asset base remains BetMGM, the company’s joint venture in the United States sports betting market, which continues to represent a core strategic asset despite ongoing regulatory scrutiny surrounding adjacent market segments.
Market commentary reflects a complex balancing act between immediate structural pressures and long-term asset value. Dan Coatsworth, head of markets at AJ Bell, noted that the operator has contended with high UK gambling taxes, intensified competition, and slower-than-expected expansion in certain international segments.
Nevertheless, corporate management maintains its established operational targets for the full 2026 financial year:
Online Growth: Targeted online Net Gaming Revenue growth between 5% and 7% on a constant-currency basis.
Earnings Targets: Projected underlying EBITDA between £910 million and £960 million, excluding BetMGM parent fees.
Profitability: Maintaining an online EBITDA margin target between 21% and 22%.
