Genting Given Green Light to Revamp Iconic London Venue

The Trocadero Centre, a historic landmark in London, is poised for a significant transformation as Genting Casinos has received the green light to convert part of the venue into a casino. This  marks a new chapter for the Trocadero, which has seen various incarnations since its inception in the late 19th century. The decision has sparked discussions about the implications of such a venture, particularly given its proximity to a newly approved mosque within the same building.

The Trocadero Centre, located just a stone’s throw from Piccadilly Circus, has long been a focal point for entertainment in London. Originally opened as a restaurant in 1896, it has undergone numerous transformations, including serving as an amusement arcade and housing the famous SegaWorld. The latest proposal, approved by Westminster Council, will see Genting Casinos convert the former Opium nightclub and several retail units into a casino with a capacity for 1,250 patrons.

Job Creation and Economic Impact

One of the most significant aspects of this development is the potential for job creation. Genting Casinos has indicated that the new venue will generate approximately 350 jobs, providing a much-needed boost to the local economy. The casino will also feature a 75-cover restaurant, further enhancing its appeal as a nightlife destination.

To address concerns about safety and crowd management, Genting has committed to implementing round-the-clock security at the casino. The company has assured local residents and businesses that a robust operational management plan will be in place to mitigate any potential disturbances associated with increased foot traffic in the area.

Adding complexity to the situation is the presence of a mosque within the same building. Approved in June 2023, the mosque will accommodate up to 390 worshippers and is part of a charitable initiative led by Asif Aziz, the owner of the Trocadero. The juxtaposition of a casino and a place of worship has raised eyebrows, particularly given that gambling is considered ‘haram’ or forbidden in Islam.

Community Concerns

Local community groups, including The Soho Society, have voiced their concerns regarding the potential for increased noise and disruption in the area. Critics argue that the casino could lead to a surge in nightclub-style crowds, making Coventry Street “busy to unmanageable.” Elizabeth Gallagher, a representative from The Soho Society, expressed her apprehension during the planning meeting, stating, “We do not believe this proposal is right for the area.”

In response to these concerns, Genting’s chief financial officer, James Axelby, emphasised the company’s commitment to restoring the building’s prestige and improving the overall quality of offerings in the area. He stated, “We strongly believe our proposal is better than the existing uses of the sites, led by a best-in-class gaming offer.”

The Trocadero’s Historical Significance

The Trocadero has a rich history that dates back over a century. After its initial opening as a restaurant, it transitioned into an entertainment hub, featuring various attractions such as laser tag and bowling. The venue’s most notable incarnation was as SegaWorld, which operated from 1996 until its closure in 2014. Since then, the building has been repurposed as a hotel, with the casino development marking a return to its entertainment roots.

The Trocadero’s architectural significance cannot be overlooked. The building has undergone various renovations over the years, and Genting’s plans include restoring its façade, which has been marred by unsightly signage. This restoration effort aims to enhance the visual appeal of the landmark and attract more visitors to the area.

As the Trocadero prepares for its transformation, the future looks promising. The combination of a casino and a mosque within the same building presents a unique opportunity for cultural exchange and community engagement. While challenges remain, the potential for revitalising this iconic venue is significant.
