The iconic Trocadero building in London’s West End, once home to a vibrant nightclub and restaurant, is on the verge of a significant transformation. Genting Casinos UK Ltd has submitted a proposal to Westminster City Council to convert the site into a two-storey casino, which could accommodate up to 1,250 patrons. This ambitious project aims to breathe new life into the historic venue the casino operator said.

The proposed casino will feature a dedicated restaurant on the ground floor, separate from the gaming area, allowing both casino-goers and the general public. The application outlines plans for a new shopfront and entrance on Coventry Street, replacing the existing souvenir shop and Bestmart entrance. Additionally, two new shopfronts are planned along Rupert Street, along with double-glazed windows on Lyons Corner.

The new casino will be designed with accessibility in mind, featuring internal connections via new stairs and a lift. The gaming area will span the basement, part of the ground floor, and the first floor, ensuring a spacious and inviting environment for visitors.

Community Concerns

Despite the potential benefits, the proposal has faced opposition from local groups, particularly the Soho Society. Critics argue that introducing another large gambling venue could exacerbate existing issues such as antisocial behaviour, pedestrian congestion, and noise pollution in the area. They express concerns that Coventry Street is already saturated with late-night venues, which could lead to further complications.

Genting’s Response

In response to these concerns, Genting Casinos has emphasised that the venue will not be alcohol-led. The company insists that the casino will operate under a highly regulated framework, adhering to an operational management plan designed to mitigate potential negative impacts on the community. Genting’s commitment to responsible gaming and community engagement is central to their proposal.

Westminster City Council’s planning officers have assessed the proposal and concluded that the new casino would not detract from the character or function of the area. Historically, casinos have been known to contribute minimally to disorder, largely due to the strict licensing regulations they must adhere to. The council’s assessment suggests that the casino could replace the former nightclub, which had a history of operating until the early hours of the morning.

The Trocadero site has a storied past, having previously housed the Opium nightclub, which closed in 2019 following a tragic incident involving gun violence. The building has also been home to the Bubba Gump restaurant, making its transformation into a casino a significant shift in its use. The council’s planning committee is set to review the application on September 30.
