Grand National Ignore Calls For Date Change

Owners of Aintree racecourse and the most bet on race in the UK, the Grand National has rejected the idea from the Betting & Gaming Council to delay the event by a few days to allow betting shops to reopen and help bookmakers in taking bets.

The Jockey Club who own and organise the Grand National which is set for the 10^th April will not change its date said Dickon White from the Jockey Club.

According to reports the Jockey Club believe that the UK government who have set the dates for reopening of the economy which include 12^th April for betting shops is “not set in stone” and could be delayed further.

Michael Dugher, chief executive of the Betting & Gaming Council said on the decision: “Whilst we of course respect the decision of the Jockey Club, this news is nonetheless a disappointing blow. Briefly delaying the race could have provided a much-needed boost to racing, to the high street and to millions of punters who support this great sport.

“Races are routinely rescheduled, including most recently because of bad weather. Of course there is always a risk with any decision, but I regret that a ‘can do’ approach did not prevail in this instance.

“This decision will also surprise many people who understand the challenging financial climate racing currently faces.”
