Macau Early Numbers For CNY Down 70%
According to analysts and data from Macau visitor figures for the first 5 days of the Chinese New Year (CNY) from 11th till 15th February are down some 71% compared to last year.
The continued presence of the COVID-19 virus in mainland China along with it being the only country able to visit Macau without any quarantine rules is having a major impact on figures for the gambling hub.
Predictions for the CNY were expected to be low but the gross gaming revenue (GGR) is at present for the first two weeks of February at $376 million, representing about 71% down from last year.
Also visitor figures for the two weeks so far including the start of the CNY are down 78% from 2020 numbers.
The CNY is the biggest holiday celebration in China and hopes for some recovery in Macau were high but so far it seems Chinese gamblers are listening to government officials and staying away from Macau this year.
