Massachusetts Sports Betting In April Enjoys Rise In Revenue

April 2025 marked an important month for sports betting in Massachusetts, with the total betting handle reaching $690.2 million, reflecting a 14.4% increase from April 2024.

The gross revenue from sports betting in Massachusetts soared to $67.6 million, representing a 33.6% year-over-year increase.

The hold percentage, which measures the amount retained by sportsbooks after payouts, rose to 9.8% in April, up from 8.4% in the same month last year.

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission reported that the state collected $13.2 million in tax revenue from sports betting operators, contributing to a year-to-date total exceeding $55 million.

In contrast to March 2025, which saw a decline in sportsbook performance due to predictable outcomes in the NCAA tournaments, April’s results were bolstered by the NBA and NHL playoffs. This shift in sporting events provided a much-needed boost to operators, leading to a 24.7% increase in month-over-month revenue.

Leading Sportsbooks in April

The competitive landscape of online sports betting in Massachusetts is dominated by several key players. Below is a breakdown of the top sportsbooks based on their April performance:

Online Operator April Handle Revenue
DraftKings $343 million $38.6 million
FanDuel $185.9 million $18.4 million
BetMGM $55.1 million $4.1 million
Fanatics Sportsbook $49.3 million $3.2 million
ESPN BET $21.7 million $1.9 million
Caesars $21.1 million $752,304

DraftKings continued to lead the market with a handle of $343 million, marking a 13% increase from the previous year. Despite a slight decline from March, where it recorded over $352 million, DraftKings maintained the highest revenue among competitors, achieving a gross income of $38.6 million.

FanDuel remained in second place, with a handle of $185.9 million, down from $208 million in March. The operator’s revenue of $18.4 million was generated from a hold just below 10%, indicating a competitive but challenging month.

Retail Sports Betting Performance

While online betting continues to dominate, retail sportsbooks also contributed to the overall handle. The retail sector recorded a 5.2% hold from a total handle of $9.7 million, reflecting an 8.5% decline from the previous month.
