In the first quarter of 2025, Melco Resorts & Entertainment Ltd. reported something of a financial turnaround, with net income soaring to US$32.5 million, a significant increase from US$15.2 million during the same period last year.

The total operating revenue for the quarter reached US$1.23 billion, marking a year-on-year increase of 10.8%. This growth can be attributed to enhanced performance across both gaming and non-gaming sectors.

Melco Resorts has reported an uptick in its gaming operations, particularly in the Macau market. The company’s chairman and CEO, Lawrence Ho Yau Lung, highlighted that property EBITDA in Macau surged by 32% quarter-over-quarter.

The mass market segment has shown consistent improvement, with the highest daily mass drop recorded during the quarter. This trend underscores the increasing patronage and engagement from visitors, which is crucial for sustaining revenue growth in the competitive gaming sector.

Market Share Expansion

Melco Resorts has successfully increased its market share in Macau, rising from 14.7% in the fourth quarter of 2024 to 15.7% in the first quarter of 2025. This upward trajectory has been maintained into April, reflecting the company’s strategic initiatives and effective marketing campaigns aimed at attracting a diverse clientele.

According to CBRE Equity Research, Melco’s performance exceeded market expectations, particularly in terms of EBITDA, which was projected at US$273 million. The firm noted that Melco’s disciplined operating expenditures and normalization of promotional activities contributed to this positive outcome.

Non-Gaming Revenue Streams

In addition to its gaming operations, Melco Resorts has made strides in enhancing its non-gaming revenue streams. The company has focused on improving customer experiences through entertainment offerings, dining options, and luxury accommodations. This diversification is essential for mitigating risks associated with fluctuations in gaming revenues.

The City of Dreams complex in Macau, for instance, reported total operating revenues of US$658.1 million, up from US$550.9 million a year earlier. The adjusted EBITDA for this property also saw a substantial increase, reflecting the effectiveness of Melco’s integrated resort model.

Challenges in Competitive Markets

While Melco Resorts has experienced growth, challenges remain, particularly in markets like the Philippines. The City of Dreams Manila has faced increased competition, resulting in a slight decline in operating revenues compared to the previous year. The property generated US$101.6 million in revenues, down from US$110.7 million in Q1 2024.

Future Prospects and Developments

Looking ahead, Melco Resorts says it is poised for further expansion, particularly with the upcoming launch of its casino operations in Sri Lanka. The City of Dreams Sri Lanka project, a collaboration with John Keells Holdings Plc, is expected to commence operations in the third quarter of 2025. Melco’s investment of US$125 million in this venture underscores its commitment to diversifying its portfolio and tapping into new markets.

The company is also focused on enhancing its existing properties, as evidenced by the recent relaunch of its resident show, The House of Dancing Water, at City of Dreams. Such initiatives are aimed at enriching the guest experience and driving repeat visits.
