MGM Osaka Unveils Stunning Development

The MGM Osaka has unveiled architectural plans for the first ever Japanese casino resort. MGM Osaka say it is poised to redefine leisure and entertainment on Yumeshima Island. With an anticipated opening in autumn 2030, this ambitious project is spearheaded by a consortium that includes MGM Resorts International and ORIX, with an estimated investment of around $10 billion.

At the heart of MGM Osaka will be a striking 27-storey tower, reaching a height of 126 metres. The design features an elegant arc shape, reminiscent of the iconic Bellagio in Las Vegas. This architectural choice not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also optimises the use of space within the resort. The tower will house two hotels, offering approximately 1,840 rooms, alongside the main casino and a state-of-the-art theatre.

Casino Specifications

The casino itself is set to be a sprawling 23,293 square metres, designed to accommodate around 470 gaming tables and an impressive 6,400 electronic gaming machines. This expansive gaming floor will cater to both local residents and international tourists, adhering to Japan’s stringent regulations governing casino operations.

Beyond the main tower, MGM Osaka will feature a substantial convention and exhibition complex, aimed at bolstering Osaka’s reputation as a business tourism destination. This four-storey facility will stand approximately 27 metres tall and cover around 16.7 hectares. It will include multiple exhibition halls, meeting rooms, and extensive parking facilities. Upon completion, the integrated resort will offer approximately 730,000 square feet dedicated to MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) and tourism-related activities.

A Third Hotel with Unique Offerings

Plans for MGM Osaka also include a third hotel, which will rise to 56 metres with 13 above-ground floors and a basement. This hotel will feature 660 rooms, specifically designed to accommodate cultural activities, such as traditional tea ceremonies. By blending modern hospitality with traditional Japanese elements.

The MGM-ORIX consortium is structured with both MGM Resorts and ORIX holding approximately 40% stakes, complemented by 22 minority shareholders. This collaborative approach ensures a balanced management strategy, leveraging the strengths of both entities to drive the project’s success. To oversee local operations, MGM has appointed Steve Zanella, an executive from Las Vegas, as President and Chief Operating Officer for Japan operations.

Osaka’s selection as the first host city for an integrated resort opens the door for further developments in Japan’s gaming sector. A new application window for additional integrated resorts is set to open from May 6 to November 5, 2027, inviting other local governments to submit proposals in partnership with private entities.
