Michigan Sports Betting Handle Slips 2% Year-over-Year in August as Seasonal Lull Takes Hold

Michigan sportsbooks accepted $330.5 million in wagers during August 2026, according to data released by the Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB), marking a rare year-over-year decline of approximately 2 percent. The figure represents the state’s lowest monthly handle since July 2025 and coincides with the traditional slow period in the professional sports calendar.

Seasonal Slowdown Drives the Dip

August is widely regarded as the quietest stretch in the North American sports calendar, with the NFL preseason yet to generate significant betting volume and Major League Baseball approaching the end of its regular season. The year-over-year decline stands out precisely because August figures rarely contract compared with the same month in prior years, when the state’s maturing market continued to post modest organic growth.

The MGCB reported that combined internet gaming (iGaming) and online sports betting gross receipts totaled $337.6 million in August, a 2.5 percent decrease from July 2026. As of the August reporting period, 15 commercial and tribal operators were active in Michigan’s regulated market.

Operator Performance Diverges

The month’s results were not uniform across the market. Only two of Michigan’s top six sports betting operators accepted more wagers than they did in August 2025, indicating that the decline was concentrated among the market’s larger platforms rather than spread evenly.

Among the notable gainers, Fanatics continued its steady climb throughout 2026, building on a year of consistent market share growth. The sportsbook has emerged as one of the more competitive challengers to the DraftKings–FanDuel duopoly, which continues to control roughly 70 percent of handle in most U.S. jurisdictions.

iGaming Provides Counterbalance

While sports betting volume softened, iGaming remains the stronger engine of Michigan’s online gaming economy. The state’s online casino segment generated $2.9 billion in adjusted gross receipts in 2025, up 32 percent year over year, and has continued to show resilience into 2026. This sustained iGaming performance has helped offset sports betting volatility during months when wagering activity is seasonally constrained.

Retail sports betting in Detroit also remained relatively stable, with the city’s three commercial casinos – MGM Grand Detroit, MotorCity Casino, and Hollywood Casino at Greektown – reporting $109.72 million in aggregate revenue for August.
