Adjusted gross receipts hit $32.70 million in March 2026, representing a 123.9% increase compared to March 2025. The state’s online sports betting handle reached $485.10 million during the month, fueled by March Madness tournament action. This figure marked an increase of more than $100 million from February’s handle, which coincided with the conclusion of the NFL season.
Total gross sports betting receipts climbed to $50 million, up more than $10 million from the previous month. The March performance generated $2.30 million in state taxes and $684,500 in city wagering taxes and municipal service fees. Consequently, operators submitted substantial payments to Michigan coffers based on the month’s robust activity.
The surge in handle and receipts demonstrates how major sporting events drive betting volume in the Michigan market. March Madness created sustained consumer interest, with both Michigan State and Oakland University advancing to the NCAA Tournament’s second round. Operators capitalized on heightened basketball betting activity throughout the month, translating increased handle into revenue gains. While the 6.7% hold rate remained modest at just a tick above February’s 6.6%, the sheer volume of wagers placed compensated for the lower margin.
FanDuel accepted $186.20 million in wagers during March, capturing $60 million more handle than DraftKings and exceeding other operators by over $100 million. The market leader generated $13 million in adjusted revenue, while DraftKings posted $6.80 million from its $126.60 million handle. BetMGM secured third position with $65.90 million in handle and $4.50 million in adjusted revenue, nearly doubling its January performance.
Mid-tier operators demonstrated varied results during the month. ESPN Bet reached profitability for the first time in 2024, reporting $873,000 in adjusted revenue from $30.70 million in handle. Caesars processed $31.50 million in wagers and generated $1 million in revenue.
Fanatics emerged as the growth story despite posting a $38,000 loss on $19.30 million in handle. The platform’s expansion trajectory positioned it among operators capitalizing on Michigan sports betting momentum. BetRivers rounded out the competitive field with $11.50 million in handle and $209 in adjusted revenue.
The operator breakdown reveals a concentrated market structure, with FanDuel and DraftKings controlling the majority of betting activity. Moreover, the gap between top-tier and mid-tier operators remained substantial, reflecting brand recognition and user acquisition advantages.
The March hold rate represents a continuing challenge for Michigan sports betting operators seeking to maximize profitability. Sportsbooks posted a 6.7% hold for the month, marginally above February’s 6.6% figure. This marks a notable decline from January’s 7.5% hold rate, establishing a downward trajectory across the first quarter.
Hold percentage measures how much revenue sportsbooks retain relative to total betting handle. A lower hold indicates operators paid out more in winnings proportionally, which directly impacts bottom-line performance. While March generated substantial gross receipts through volume, the efficiency metrics tell a different story.
The state has experienced flat tax revenue from March through May in previous years, traditionally one of the more lucrative stretches for both sportsbooks and government coffers. This seasonal pattern compounds the hold rate concerns, as operators navigate peak betting periods with compressed margins.
By comparison, other major markets maintain higher hold percentages during March Madness periods. The Michigan sports betting industry’s persistent single-digit hold raises questions about promotional intensity and competitive dynamics. Operators appear to prioritize market share and handle growth over immediate profitability, accepting thinner margins to attract and retain bettors. Following the explosive revenue gains, the low hold rate suggests operators sacrifice efficiency for volume in Michigan’s competitive landscape.
