Now with both chambers of the states legislature passing budget proposals this week which include sports betting on mobile devices apart from the current in-person betting at commercial casinos, the race is on to be ready for the start of the NFL season where betting in the US really takes off.
Since 2019 in-person betting has been allowed in New York but it is now certain that lawmakers will allow each commercial casino and racetrack operator in the state a chance to license for mobile sports betting, that could mean up to 20 different companies offering sports betting.
At present state governor Andrew Cuomo is in favour of the state lottery being the only operator for sports betting but he has little support anywhere for this idea and is certain to lose as many supporters say the state should not become a bookie.
