New Jersey Gaming Revenue Posts Growth in May

New Jersey gaming revenue reached $627.1m in May, marking continued growth for the state’s gambling sector. Revenue increased two per cent year-over-year, driven by strong performance across multiple gaming channels. The online gaming sector, specifically, generated $276.3m, representing an 11.9 per cent rise compared to the prior-year figure of $246.8m. Year-to-date total gaming revenue stands at $2.93bn, an increase of 7.2 per cent compared to the previous year. The state collected $87.4m in gross revenue taxes for May.

New Jersey Gaming Revenue Reaches $627.1M in May

The nine casino hotels generated $265.60 million in casino win for May 2026, reflecting a modest 0.1 per cent increase compared to $265.30 million recorded in May 2025. This minimal growth in traditional casino operations contrasted sharply with digital gaming performance.

Internet gaming win for casinos and their partners totaled $276.30 million, demonstrating robust expansion of 11.9 per cent against the prior year’s figure of $246.80 million. The digital segment surpassed traditional casino win in monthly revenue, underscoring the continued shift toward online platforms.

Despite gains in other sectors, sports wagering gross revenue declined significantly. Casinos, racetracks, and their partners recorded $85.20 million in sports wagering revenue for May 2026, down 16.9 per cent from $102.50 million in May 2025. This decrease offset some of the momentum generated by internet gaming growth.

The revenue composition reveals distinct performance trajectories across New Jersey gaming channels. While internet gaming maintained double-digit expansion and casino operations remained relatively flat, sports wagering faced headwinds. Combined, these three segments delivered the $627.10 million total, representing measured growth in an evolving regulatory environment where digital platforms increasingly dominate revenue generation.

Year-to-Date Performance Shows 7.2% Increase

Through May 2026, casino win accumulated $1.23bn for the year-to-date period, showing measured expansion in traditional gaming operations. Internet gaming continued its trajectory as the dominant growth driver, with year-to-date performance reflecting consistent double-digit increases that characterized the segment’s expansion since 2024.

Historical data reveals the sustained momentum of digital gaming channels. Internet gaming win exceeded $2.30bn in 2024, marking a 24.1 per cent increase from 2023. Through the first five months of 2024, online casino revenue climbed 20.6 per cent higher than the corresponding period in 2023. This pattern persisted into subsequent periods, with year-to-date internet gaming win reaching $1.88bn through August 2025, representing 23.5 per cent growth compared to the prior year-to-date period.

Sports wagering presented a contrasting narrative for cumulative performance. Year-to-date sports wagering gross revenue totaled $914.60m through October 2025, reflecting a marginal 0.2 per cent increase compared to $912.80m in the prior year-to-date period. By August 2025, sports wagering revenue stood at $708.68m, down one per cent from the previous year-to-date figure.

Casino win demonstrated stability with $2.44bn recorded through October 2025, reflecting 3.4 per cent growth compared to the prior year-to-date period.

Tax Collections and Industry Implications

Supplemental tax collections for May generated $9.50 million through the Investment Alternative Tax, while sports wagering additional taxes contributed $663,549 from casino licensees and $618,268 from racetrack operators. Year-to-date supplemental tax collections reached $42.85 million from the Investment Alternative Tax, with casino sports wagering additional taxes totaling $3.19 million and racetrack sports wagering additional taxes at $2.56 million.

The tax framework imposes an 8 per cent levy on casino gross revenue and 19.75 per cent on internet gaming gross revenue, deposited into the Casino Revenue Fund. Sports wagering faces 8.5 per cent taxation for retail operations and 19.75 per cent for online activity. Additionally, casino gross revenue incurs a 1.25 per cent charge and internet gaming a 2.5 per cent charge directed to the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority.

Notably, legislative changes effective July 1, 2025 increased online casino gambling taxes from 15 per cent to 19.75 per cent, internet sports wagering from 13 per cent to 19.75 per cent, and fantasy sports contests from 10.5 per cent to 19.75 per cent. These adjustments are projected to generate $209 million in additional state revenue during fiscal year 2026.
