New York’s online sports betting market has opened October with sustained momentum, recording its second weekly handle above $600 million within the first four weeks of the 2026 NFL season. The figures, published in weekly reports from the New York State Gaming Commission, reinforce the state’s position as the largest legal sports wagering market in the United States by volume.

The football calendar has historically driven the heaviest betting activity in New York, and the current season has followed that pattern. Week 1 of the NFL season produced approximately $595 million in wagers, the highest opening-week total in the state since legal mobile betting launched in January 2022. Subsequent weeks have kept handle elevated, with the latest reporting period crossing the $600 million threshold for the second time in four weeks.

The milestone underscores the seasonal rhythm of the market. Handle typically climbs through September and peaks in the fall, when the NFL overlaps with college football, Major League Baseball’s postseason, and the start of the NBA and NHL seasons. October has repeatedly been among the state’s strongest months for weekly volume, and 2026 appears consistent with that trend.

Context Within a Maturing Market

While the weekly totals are notable, they sit within the boundaries previously established by the market. New York set its all-time weekly online betting record in late October 2025, when operators took in roughly $655.7 million in wagers, surpassing the prior high of about $600.8 million. The current $600 million weeks represent a return to that level of demand rather than a new benchmark.

The broader year has shown some variability. Monthly comparisons earlier in 2026 indicated periods of year-over-year decline in handle, including a softer August, before football season restored volume to peak levels. This fluctuation is typical for jurisdictions whose wagering activity is concentrated around the sports calendar.

For state coffers, elevated handle translates directly into tax revenue. New York imposes a 51 percent tax rate on mobile sports wagering gross gaming revenue, the highest in the nation, and the state has collected hundreds of millions of dollars annually from the market since launch. Strong autumn weeks are a meaningful contributor to those totals.
