Ohio Sports Betting Faces Setbacks

Since the inception of legal sports betting in Ohio on January 1st, the Ohio Casino Control Commission (OCCC) has overseen the industry with the initial months showing promise, with a remarkable total of $520.6 million in online and retail sports betting revenue recorded in April. Nevertheless, recent reports from the OCCC have revealed a sharp decline in June, with revenue plummeting to a mere $362.1 million, marking the lowest monthly figure since the industry’s inception.

Despite the overall slump, online bookmakers have emerged well, capturing a staggering 96% of the market in June. These digital platforms have succeeded in attracting an astonishing $365 million in wagers, solidifying their popularity among Ohio’s bettors. Leading the pack is Bet365, generating $26.5 million in revenue, closely followed by BetMGM with $25.8 million. FanDuel, a household name in the sports betting world, has also left its mark with an impressive $120.3 million in revenue. These online platforms not only captivate Ohioans but also contribute significantly to the state’s tax revenue, surpassing $12 million in the first half of the year.

In contrast, the retail sports betting sector has encountered its fair share of challenges. In May, revenue from retail sports betting plummeted to $15.6 million, marking a staggering 43.7% drop compared to the previous month. The decline persisted in June, with revenue reaching the same underwhelming amount, presenting a significant setback for brick-and-mortar establishments. Retail sports betting operators are now strategizing to allure bettors and regain momentum within this fiercely competitive landscape.

Despite the recent decline in sports betting revenue, Ohio’s tax revenue remains steadfast. Since the launch of legal sports betting, the state has collected an impressive $51 million in taxes. Undoubtedly, these funds will contribute to essential public services and infrastructure development across Ohio. Furthermore, the sports betting industry has had a positive impact on Ohio’s economy, generating job opportunities and income for various businesses.

While the industry grapples with challenges, there is an air of optimism for dynamic growth in the months to come. Both online and retail establishments are ardently striving to attract bettors and regain momentum. Ohio’s sports betting landscape is evolving, and all eyes are on how the state will embrace new opportunities and navigate the ever-changing world of sports betting.
