Oregon may be forced to delay sports betting

Although the process of legalising sports betting is now well and truly underway throughout the United States, it seems that for the time being Oregon will have to hold back. Although the wheels are already in motion within the state, there is still a lot to do before the Oregon Lottery can actually offer sports gambling in full.

The Oregonian’s John Canzano has attempted that he does not expect the process to be completed ahead of the NFL regular season but that everything is moving forward. He argued that delays should be seen as a positive sign and that the industry is taking caution in rolling out the new legalities.

The state has now given its sports wagering a name, the Oregon Lottery Scorecard, and it will now be introduced in phases.

The first will be a digital sportsbook which will cover the major sports leagues such as the NFL, NBA and more. The digital platform will be able to take wagers from anyone aged 21 or over and who live within the state. However, the exception will be those who live on tribal land, who will not be illegible for betting.

The Oregon Lottery is deploying geo-fencing technology to ensure that all out-of-bound areas are blocked

In order for this to be successful, there is to be an app and website that users will be able to use, and parlay bets, in-game wagers and single-game bets will be allowed. It has also now been alluded that the app will be Apple compatible, despite earlier concerns that it would not be.

Phase two of the roll out, which will only be completed once phase one has been executed successfully, will see sports gambling kiosks placed into retail locations that are operated by the Lottery.

There had been a small chance that the entire process would have been completed before the NFL season began but that has now been seen as impossible.
