Sky City Warned Over Online Gambling Promotion

Casino operator Sky City Entertainment which runs 5 casinos in Australia and New Zealand has been given a formal warning over an email sent to its customers both local and overseas promoting their online casino.

The email which was sent to its loyalty programme customers said that even thou their casinos were closed the online offering was still open for business. However this breaches the gambling act there that forbids operators from promoting gambling to overseas players.

The warning from the industry watchdog said that, “SkyCity did not intentionally set out to breach the Act, So a formal warning is appropriate and proportionate.”

“We expect SkyCity to exercise a high level of caution in future to avoid breaching the Act. The department will take any future breaches seriously.”

In response to the breach a Sky City spokesperson said: “The purpose of the email was to advise customers of the overall impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic on SkyCity’s operations and SkyCity believes that it did not contravene the provisions of the Gambling Act.

“SkyCity respects the view of the department however and will take into account the feedback received.”

It is understood that no more action will follow the warning unless another breach occurs.
