Star Entertainment Group Sells 50 Per Cent Brisbane Queens Wharf Stake to Hong Kong Investors

Star Entertainment Group Brisbane Queens Wharf has completed a significant ownership restructure, with the casino operator selling half its stake in the landmark development to Hong Kong-based investors. The transaction marks a pivotal moment for Star Entertainment Brisbane as the company continues its broader asset sell-off strategy to stabilize finances. Chow Tai Fook Enterprises and Far East Consortium have acquired the 50 per cent stake, positioning themselves ahead of the Brisbane 2032 Olympics. The sale encompasses the integrated resort project currently under development in Brisbane’s central business district.

Star Entertainment Brisbane Finalizes Queen’s Wharf Sale to Hong Kong Partners

The transaction valued Star’s 50 per cent ownership at GBP 42.09 million, purchased by Chow Tai Fook Enterprises and Far East Consortium. Star Entertainment Group Brisbane Queens Wharf completed stage one of the disposal, which involves the exit from Destination Brisbane Consortium, the owner of the integrated resort. The sale encompasses Brisbane’s Treasury Hotel and carpark, along with the Charlotte Street car park.

Star Entertainment Brisbane will continue managing the casino complex under revised financial terms. The company receives a fixed annual fee of GBP 14.29 million, paid monthly at GBP 1.19 million. This represents a significant reduction from the original proposal, which outlined GBP 3.97 million per month in the first financial year, rising to GBP 4.76 million monthly the following year and GBP 5.56 million by 2028. Under the new agreement, Star can earn performance-based incentive fees based on earnings.

The Hong Kong investors hold termination rights under the Casino Management Agreement, allowing them to exit with 90 days notice in certain circumstances related to performance. Stage two of the transaction involves disposal of interests in the Destination Gold Coast Consortium and other Brisbane assets Star owns or partially owns, with completion expected during the second half of 2026 and no later than 31 March 2027.

How Hong Kong Investors Plan to Leverage Brisbane Olympics 2032

Chow Tai Fook Enterprises co-CEO Christopher Cheng outlined the investment rationale behind the acquisition, emphasizing Brisbane’s upcoming global spotlight. “Queen’s Wharf has quickly established itself as a leading tourism, hospitality, retail and entertainment precinct, and we see further opportunity ahead as Brisbane prepares to host the world in 2032 for the Olympics and Paralympics,” Cheng stated.

The Hong Kong partners view the transaction as providing a stable ownership structure and strong financial foundation to support the precinct’s continued development. Equally important, the investors place a strong focus on regulatory compliance and operational integrity, addressing concerns that plagued Star Entertainment Brisbane under previous management.

Far East Consortium and Chow Tai Fook Enterprises indicated their strategy aligns with longer-term goals of optimizing investments in Australia. The partners plan to continue normal operations at the Star Entertainment Group Brisbane Queens Wharf development while positioning the integrated resort to capitalize on increased tourism and international attention surrounding the Olympic Games.

The acquisition represents a calculated bet on Brisbane’s transformation into a major global destination, with the Olympics serving as a catalyst for sustained growth in the hospitality and entertainment sectors.

What Star’s Asset Sell-Off Reveals About Its Financial Recovery

Star Entertainment Group Brisbane Queens Wharf’s divestment forms part of a broader financial restructuring necessitated by severe operational pressures. The casino operator recorded a loss of GBP 339.82 million in the most recent financial year, triggering a 45 per cent decline in share value. Consequently, the company trades near historic lows at approximately 10 Australian cents per share.

Leadership instability has marked Star Entertainment Brisbane’s recovery efforts. Chief Financial Officer Frank Krile resigned with immediate effect after a one-year tenure, while Group Chief Operating Officer Jeannie Mok departed at the end of January 2026. Bruce Mathieson Jnr became the company’s fourth CEO in three years, with his appointment pending regulatory approvals in New South Wales and Queensland.

Bally’s Corporation and the Mathieson family engineered a GBP 238.25 million rescue package in November to prevent collapse. The funding agreement gave Bally’s a 38 per cent stake and the Mathieson family 23 per cent, establishing control over Star Entertainment Brisbane. During March 2026, Star Entertainment Brisbane secured an additional GBP 309.72 million refinancing commitment from WhiteHawk Capital Partners to address existing group debt.

Financial risks remain substantial. Australia’s financial crimes watchdog could impose penalties up to GBP 317.66 million for historical anti-money laundering breaches. Star Entertainment Brisbane warned that even fines significantly below this threshold would severely strain its finances.
