In a move aimed at revitalizing its operations, Star Entertainment Group has announced a series of key appointments as it embarks on it’s journey of recovery following a tumultuous period marked by scandals and financial instability. The casino operator, now under the ownership of Bally’s Corporation, is taking steps to enhance its governance and operational framework across its properties in New South Wales and Queensland.

A Fresh Leadership Team

Helen Galloway, a seasoned executive with extensive experience in governance, has been appointed as the independent chair of The Star Sydney. Galloway, who also serves as a director of Hockey Australia and chair of Bank of Us, is expected to play a pivotal role in steering the organization towards a more transparent and accountable governance structure. Her appointment is part of a broader strategy to decentralize operations and improve oversight across Star’s various properties.

In addition to Galloway’s appointment, Star has brought in Jennifer Cronin as the interim CEO of The Star Gold Coast. Cronin, a veteran in the hospitality industry, is tasked with leading the Gold Coast operations during this transitional phase. Alongside her, Patrick McGlinchey has been appointed as the group chief legal officer, while Rowena Craze, formerly of KPMG, takes on the role of group chief risk officer. Sarah Derry has been named chief people officer, and Peter Meliniotis will serve as the group chief information officer.

These appointments come in the wake of regulatory scrutiny and the need for Star to align its operations with the expectations of gaming commissions in both New South Wales and Queensland. The company has faced significant challenges, including a trading halt earlier this year due to its inability to publish financial results on time. The new leadership team is expected to address these issues head-on, ensuring compliance and restoring stakeholder confidence.

A Response to Financial Pressures

Star’s financial performance has been underwhelming, with a reported revenue decline of over 16% for the first half of the 2025 financial year. The company also faced a $21 million loss in the first quarter, attributed to reduced visitor numbers and gaming restrictions. .

The backdrop to these changes is Star’s recent $300 million acquisition by Bally’s Corporation, a move that has injected much-needed capital into the struggling casino operator. This partnership is expected to provide Star with the resources and strategic direction necessary to navigate its current challenges and it hopes to emerge stronger.

In addition to the acquisition, publican billionaire Bruce Mathieson has contributed $100 million in short-term cash to support Star’s operations. This financial backing is crucial as the company seeks to implement its recovery plan and regain its footing in the gaming market.
