Bristol City Council in the South West of England has become one of the first ever districts in the UK to totally ban any advertising towards gambling, alcohol, high sugar content foods and payday loans.

The council said it was “the most complete policy of its kind,” it is reported that the council will lose around £150,000 in lost advertising in its spaces a year but says the move is the most comprehensive restrictions on advertising in the UK.

With implementing the ban which will cover the council’s social media channels, advertising within museums and libraries, customer service outlets, bus shelters and the council’s seventeen advertising hoardings.

Bristol’s Deputy Mayor said on the decision: “We take the health of our residents seriously and have been working with our local public health experts for some time to find ways to support the health of our citizens.

“One of the ways we intend to do this is to restrict the most harmful types of advertising from city centre banners, digital screens and bus stop adverts.

“By putting people’s health first, we have made Bristol’s policy one of the strongest in the country, leading by example and showing willingness to take a potential hit on our income in order to support people’s health and wellbeing.”
