The Victoria Gate Casino in Leeds reopened its doors on Tuesday to customers following the reinstatement of its operating licence, which had been suspended due to serious concerns regarding money laundering and terrorist financing risks.
At the end of October, the Gambling Commission took decisive action by suspending the casino’s licence after a compliance assessment revealed substantial deficiencies in its anti-money laundering (AML) policies and procedures.
The compliance assessment highlighted several critical issues, including:
In response to the suspension, Victoria Gate Casino undertook a series of significant actions aimed at addressing the concerns raised by the Gambling Commission. These measures were crucial in demonstrating the casino’s commitment to compliance and responsible gambling practices.
The most notable change was hiring industry experienced executive Richard Noble as their new Chief Executive, the iGaming Post spoke with Noble on the news of the lifting of the license and said, “The company has addressed concerns raised by the Gambling Commission, and we’re pleased to have reopened and are excited to welcome our guests back. We remain dedicated to offering a first-class entertainment experience in the heart of Leeds.”
The casino has also committed to undergoing an independent audit within six weeks. This audit will assess the effectiveness of the newly implemented policies and procedures, ensuring that the casino meets the required standards set by the Gambling Commission.
To further bolster its compliance efforts, Victoria Gate Casino has introduced comprehensive training programmes for its staff. These programmes focus on anti-money laundering practices and social responsibility, equipping employees with the knowledge and skills necessary to identify and mitigate potential risks.
Following the successful implementation of these changes, the Gambling Commission announced that the suspension had been lifted, allowing Victoria Gate Casino to reopen for business. The casino confirmed its reopening on Tuesday afternoon, welcoming back patrons eager to enjoy its offerings.
