Vietnam Police Bust $26 Million Illegal Gambling Syndicate
Law enforcement authorities in Vietnam have busted an illegal online gambling business worth nearly $26 million with 10 arrests made.
Police said that the raids on Tuesday found large sums of cash and firearms along with proof of illegal online sports betting. According to officials they found several online websites offering hundreds of gamblers betting on sports since July this year.
“We arrested seven people and three others turned themselves in. The investigation is still ongoing to see if anyone else is involved,” the police said to AFP Tuesday.
According to reports among those arrested were local law enforcement officers charged with fighting illegal gambling.
With a population of some 93 million Vietnam is a lucrative market for gambling and sports betting is a very popular underground activity.
Police also said they are also investigating another illegal betting syndicate that could be worth over $400 million with many officials from the government possibly involved.
