{"id":43080,"date":"2020-09-16T10:53:35","date_gmt":"2020-09-16T10:53:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gaming-awards.com\/NEWS\/?p=43080"},"modified":"2020-09-16T10:53:35","modified_gmt":"2020-09-16T10:53:35","slug":"uk-10pm-curfew-would-cost-thousands-of-casino-jobs-says-bgc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gaming-awards.com\/NEWS\/uk-10pm-curfew-would-cost-thousands-of-casino-jobs-says-bgc\/","title":{"rendered":"UK 10pm Curfew Would Cost Thousands Of Casino Jobs Says BGC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-41779\" src=\"https:\/\/gaming-awards.com\/NEWS\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Betting-Gaming-Council-logo-300x107.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"107\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gaming-awards.com\/NEWS\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Betting-Gaming-Council-logo-300x107.jpg 300w, https:\/\/gaming-awards.com\/NEWS\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Betting-Gaming-Council-logo.jpg 528w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>The Betting &amp; Gaming Council (BGC) has issued a letter to\u00a0<span>Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden saying that a curfew would devastate the already struggling casino industry in the UK, below is the full statement from the BGC\u00a0chief executive Michael Dugher:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Thousands of jobs in the UK\u2019s casino sector would be lost if 10pm curfews were imposed on businesses in an attempt to tackle Covid-19, the Betting and Gaming Council has warned.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Central government and local authorities are considering the drastic measure, which would see venues across the country forced to close their doors.<br \/>\nIn a letter to Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden, BGC chief executive Michael Dugher and Genting UK boss Paul Wilcock say such a move would \u201cdevastate\u201d casinos, which do between 50 and 70 per cent of their trade after 10pm.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Britain\u2019s casinos \u2013 which employ 14,000 people and have contributed \u00a31.3bn in tax to the Treasury over the last three years \u2013 only re-opened last month after closing in March as part of the country-wide coronavirus lockdown.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">They have been praised for their stringent anti-Covid measures, such as limits on capacity, Perspex screens and sophisticated track and trace systems, with Public Health England and the Department for Health and Social Care declaring casinos were not \u201chigher risk\u201d in July.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In their letter, Mr Dugher and Mr Wilcock point out that a typical casino visitor is aged 48, well above the age profile that ministers and councillors would be trying to target with the imposition of a curfew.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Furthermore, groups of young adults do not tend to gather in casinos to drink after 10pm, with venues vowing to take action to actively prevent it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The letter says: \u201cTo ensure the sector\u2019s survival it is vital that any additional Covid social distancing measures, such as curfews, are not imposed on businesses that have demonstrated that they are Covid-secure and do not cater for the age group targeted by the measure.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cThe introduction of a blanket measure such as curfews would certainly result in many thousands of redundancies in a very short timeframe.
