Allwyn the new operator for the lottery<\/p><\/div>\n

The National Lottery, once a beloved British institution and a significant contributor to charitable causes, has faced a series of challenges since the Czech lottery giant Allwyn took over its operations earlier this year. From technological setbacks and legal disputes to concerns about the company’s suitability and its ambitious financial projections, the new operator’s journey has been far from smooth.<\/p>\n

As the National Lottery grapples with these issues, the question arises: is Allwyn losing the battle to revive this iconic brand and fulfill its promise of revitalizing the lottery’s operations and boosting returns to good causes?<\/p>\n

When Allwyn won the bid to operate the National Lottery in March 2022, it was hailed as a new era for the storied institution. The company, backed by business luminaries like Sir Keith Mills and Justin King, promised to revamp the lottery through new games and draws, ultimately driving increased sales and generating more funds for charitable causes.<\/p>\n

However, even before the official handover, Allwyn was forced to backpedal on some of its commitments. The company warned that delays in introducing planned new games could negatively impact the amount of money raised for good causes, a concerning revelation that cast doubt on its ability to deliver on its ambitious promises.<\/p>\n

One of Allwyn’s key challenges has been the complex technological transition it has undertaken. The company has sought to end the National Lottery’s long-standing association with International Game Technology (IGT), the provider of the software and hardware powering the lottery’s shop terminals since its inception in 1994.<\/p>\n

This move has been described as “one of the biggest tech transitions undertaken by a lottery provider anywhere,” with some experts likening it to “trying to stick a Microsoft system on top of an Apple computer.” The legal dispute with IGT, which was eventually dismissed in the High Court, has further delayed the implementation of these technological changes.<\/p>\n

The technological challenges have had a tangible impact on the National Lottery’s operations, leading to a raft of issues that have frustrated both customers and retailers. Customers have faced long delays in receiving their winnings, while retailers have encountered trouble with the system that automatically replenishes scratch cards, leaving some with empty dispensers.<\/p>\n

The company was reportedly expected to deliver between \u00a310.4 billion and \u00a310.5 billion in turnover in the first year, significantly higher than the \u00a38.2 billion generated by the National Lottery in its final year under Camelot’s management.<\/p>\n

However, the recent setbacks have made it increasingly difficult for Allwyn to reach these lofty targets. The Gambling Commission has even revised the estimated value of Allwyn’s 10-year license, reducing it to between \u00a37.9 billion and \u00a37.8 billion based on updated sales forecasts.<\/p>\n

The decision to award the National Lottery license to Allwyn has also faced criticism from rival bidders, who have raised concerns about the independence of the Gambling Commission’s chief adviser, Rothschild, and the fairness of the overall bidding process.<\/p>\n

Members of Parliament, including Sir Iain Duncan Smith, have also expressed doubts about Allwyn’s suitability, particularly in light of the issues that have emerged since the company took over the National Lottery’s operations.<\/p>\n

In the face of these challenges, Allwyn has sought to ingratiate itself with the establishment through extensive lobbying and expensive marketing efforts. The company is a marquee sponsor of high-profile events like the Spectator magazine’s annual garden party and the Society of Editors’ “Media Freedom” awards, showcasing its desire to build connections within political and media circles.<\/p>\n

Allwyn has also lent its name to a three-day event at the recent Labour Party conference, where attendees were invited to discuss the future of the creative and cultural industries. This move suggests the company’s eagerness to position itself as a key player in the broader landscape of British institutions and industries.<\/p>\n

Despite the setbacks, Allwyn remains committed to the modernization of the National Lottery, having invested more than \u00a3300 million in the process. The company has attributed the delays to “near continuous and disruptive legal actions” brought by parties disappointed by the outcome of the Fourth National Lottery Licence competition.<\/p>\n
