The Seattle-New England matchup generated the lowest Super Bowl handle for Nevada bookmakers since 2016, when bettors wagered $132.5 million on Denver’s victory over Carolina. This year’s figure represents an 11.7% decline from last year’s $151.6 million and sits 29.6% below the all-time record of $190 million set in 2024 when Las Vegas hosted its first Super Bowl.<\/p>\n
Surprisingly, the current handle failed to surpass the $136 million wagered during the 2021 pandemic-restricted Super Bowl. In spite of that, Nevada sportsbooks managed to secure $9.9 million in winnings from this year’s game, achieving a 7.4% hold percentage.<\/p>\n
The declining trend has now continued for two consecutive years. This marks the second straight Super Bowl with a double-digit percentage drop in betting volume. Over the last several years, this year’s figures stand in stark contrast to the upward trajectory seen throughout most of the previous decade, especially before the 2024 peak that coincided with Las Vegas hosting duties.<\/p>\n
Industry experts have identified several significant factors behind the Nevada Super Bowl handle being the lowest since 2016. We primarily noticed that the matchup lacked the star power that usually boosts betting interest.<\/p>\n
“One of the factors was probably a lack of star power,” explained Westgate vice president of race and sports John Murray. “I know Drake Maye has a chance to be a great player, but he’s still at the beginning of his career. Even the one year the Super Bowl didn’t have Tom Brady or Patrick Mahomes, it was still Matthew Stafford versus Joe Burrow.”<\/p>\n
More, both teams featured defense-heavy strategies, leading to cautious betting patterns. “This year’s game also featured two defensive-minded teams, and we saw more ‘under’ action on the Super Bowl props, which in turn affected a lower prop handle as well.”<\/p>\n
The relatively low-scoring nature of the contest until the fourth quarter also dampened betting enthusiasm, as most prop bets stayed under their projected totals. This outcome disappointed many bettors who usually favor “overs” on touchdowns and receiving yards.<\/p>\n
Red Rock Resort sportsbook director Chuck Esposito noted that timing also played a significant role: “Pats-Seahawks followed a season where the guests did not have a good season and was poor in match for NFL bettors. It definitely helps shape the overall handle on the game.”<\/p>\n
