The province established a dual oversight system separating regulatory enforcement from commercial operations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission (AGLC) serves as the market regulator, handling operator registration, compliance enforcement, and responsible gambling standards.\u00a0The newly created Alberta iGaming Corporation (AiGC) manages commercial agreements with licensed operators and oversees market conduct. Operators must secure both AGLC registration and an AiGC operating agreement before accepting wagers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Registration opened on January 13, 2026, drawing significant industry interest.\u00a0As of May 2026, 28 operators had completed registration with the AGLC.\u00a0More than 50 platforms received approval by July 8, 2026.\u00a0Major brands entering the Alberta online sports betting market include DraftKings, FanDuel, BetMGM, Caesars, theScore Bet, BetRivers, and PointsBet.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Licensing requires operators to pay a $50,000 application fee and $150,000 annual renewal fee.\u00a0During the registration period, operators could advertise and conduct customer sign-ups but could not accept deposits or wagers until the official launch.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: left;\">How Alberta Plans to Capture the Gray Market<\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Gray market operators accounted for approximately 70% of Alberta&#8217;s online gambling activity before the regulated market launch.\u00a0These offshore platforms, operating without provincial oversight, prompted officials to develop a transition pathway similar to Ontario&#8217;s approach.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The AGLC requires operators to cease gray market activity before receiving licensing approval.\u00a0Altenar, an Isle of Man-based operator with regulatory approvals in Brazil and Romania, received AGLC registration after meeting this requirement.\u00a0Many operators currently serving Albertans through unregulated channels are joining the licensed framework.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Minister Nally acknowledged that provinces cannot shut down internet access to offshore sites. Instead, bringing established operators under provincial regulation serves as the primary tool for market control.\u00a0Alberta benefits from entering an established market rather than creating demand from scratch.\u00a0Research estimates that Canadians spent $14 billion CAD with gray and black market operators nationally.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Ontario&#8217;s experience demonstrates the strategy&#8217;s potential effectiveness. While 70% of Ontario players used gray market sites in 2022, that figure reversed to 91% choosing regulated platforms by 2025\u00a0[17].<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In addition to provincial revenue, operators must contribute 1% of gross gaming revenue toward responsible gambling resources and treatment programs.\u00a0Nally emphasized this represents the first time operators will fund treatment services directly.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: left;\">Market Timing, Revenue Projections, and Alberta&#8217;s Unique Position<\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Research firm H2 Gambling Capital projects Alberta&#8217;s iCasino market will generate $850 million in gross gaming revenue for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2027, rising to $1.57 billion the following year.\u00a0Online sports betting revenue estimates reach $142 million for the first fiscal year and $246 million for the second.\u00a0Consequently, total online gambling revenue could approach $2.80 billion over approximately two calendar years.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">H2 views Alberta&#8217;s market as roughly 25% the size of Ontario&#8217;s iGaming sector and 34% of Ontario&#8217;s sports betting market, aligning with population ratios.\u00a0Ontario houses more than 16 million residents compared to Alberta&#8217;s 5 million.
