One of the world’s largest online casino and sports betting websites has ceased serving Irish customers following an intervention by the Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland (GRAI). The move represents a significant early enforcement outcome for Ireland’s newly established gambling regime and signals a tougher stance toward operators targeting the market without the appropriate authorisation.<\/p>\n
The operator, which describes itself as the world’s largest betting website (believed to be Stake), has been geoblocked from the Irish market after the GRAI took action over its lack of a licence. The platform, offering both online casino and sports betting products, is no longer accessible to users located in Ireland.<\/p>\n
The intervention is not an isolated case. Other operators have also closed betting activities to Irish customers in recent months, namely Kalshi and Polymarket and the regulator is reported to be investigating more than 100 sites operating in the jurisdiction without authorisation.<\/p>\n
Under the Gambling Regulation Act 2024, the GRAI has the power to sanction operators or pursue legal action against firms that provide gambling services to Irish consumers without the appropriate licence. The regulator has also been developing additional enforcement tools, including an application for “trusted flagger status” with Coimisi\u00fan na Me\u00e1n, which would allow flagged illegal gambling sites to be taken down within two hours.<\/p>\n
The enforcement action follows the commencement of Ireland’s new licensing framework earlier in 2026. On 1 July, the GRAI began issuing its first remote betting and betting intermediary licences, marking a milestone in the most significant reform of Ireland’s gambling sector in decades. All online operators seeking to serve Irish customers are now required to hold a GRAI-issued licence and comply with strengthened consumer protection and compliance obligations.<\/p>\n
For unlicensed offshore operators, the regulatory landscape has changed materially. Previously, many international platforms served Irish customers from other jurisdictions with limited oversight.
