French online gambling operator Betclic has announced it is leaving the UK market on the 1st November. The operator told its affiliates that Betclic (Everest) Gibraltal Limited, which holds a UK Gambling Commission License is to suspend all activities within the UK from that date and no further payments to affiliates will be made following their withdrawal.

Betclic is following in the footsteps of other overseas operators removing themselves from the UK which includes over recent months Vera&John and InterCasino.

The operator cited the large penalties given out recently by the UK Gambling Commission to other operators and that Betclic are concerned that they themselves could face possible fines.

Over recent times the Gambling Commission have given out some strong penalties to operators it believes have stepped over the line in advertising and promoting their brands within the UK along with breaking regulations on targeting problem gamblers.

One Gambling Consultant told the iGaming Post, “Betclic is the latest of what I am sure will be many more to follow over the next 12 months, at present the UK Gambling Commission are penalising companies with huge amounts in fines and some operators that are not making a huge amount in the UK market fear any fine or penalty could finish their business entirely.”
