Retail continues to decline
Bookies William Hill have become embroiled in a row after they’ve refused to pay out on a double bet which two of their punters believe should have netted them £23,400. Kris Shenton and his best friend Gary Smeaton placed the bet back in January, getting behind their team, the Salford Red Devils. When both their predictions came in, the pair were overjoyed and believed they’d won a whopping £23,400. However, their elation turned to anger when they went to collect and William Hill refused to pay on a technicality.
Double bet on the Red Devils
The duo decided to place a bet in January, paying £50 each to cover a £100 accumulator which included Jackson Hastings being named as the Man of Steel for the Super League and the Red Devils to finish the season in the top 5. The first bet was offered at 25-1 and the second at 8-1, with the pair ready to claim £23,400 if the accumulator came through.
Despite the odds, both of the bets were winners with Hastings emerging victorious under the new voting system and Salford reaching the Grand Final.
With things looking bleak back in January and no-one rating the Red Devil’s chances, the success came as a big surprise.
However, on claiming their winnings, they were shocked to be told by the bookies that they would not be paying out. According to William Hill, the bet should never have been accepted and they’re unwilling to honor their own mistake.
Refused on a technicality
William Hill have told the pair that it considers the two bets to be linked and as such, they cannot have them together in an accumulator.
The bet was written out on the slip by a William Hill employee but despite this, the bookie says it will not pay out. The employee who wrote out the betting slip has dismissed his mistake, saying he was “half asleep” when writing it out.
According to William Hill rules, if part of one bet can influence the other bet, they cannot be taken together. They are of the opinion that the two bets are related and as such, have refused to pay out in full. They have offered to pay the bets out individually, but the winnings are much smaller at just £1700 each.
So far the pair have refused to accept William Hill’s decision and are prepared to fight further for what they believe they are entitled to. The bookie so far is refusing to back down and has pointed its customers to Independent Betting Adjudication Service to make a complaint.
