International Women’s Day (IWD) is celebrated annually today, March 8th to recognise and celebrate the achievements of women worldwide. In 2015 Sun set up SoGal because she saw a gaping hole in the venture capital world. Sun has gone from strength to strength, expanding her first $15 million fund to $7.8 billion in market value and having five unicorns. Despite her challenges, such as not being taken seriously or needing to overexplain themselves in the boardroom, Sun sees it as a “unique gift” that helps her stand out from other investors.

On International Women’s Day, we must remember that women-founded startups are receiving just 2.5% of all venture capital investments, which puts them at an advantage as they know how to be capital-efficient. This is a typical spin that women put on a negative situation and turn the lack of funding into a positive one.
