PADDY Power has yet again caused a stir in the world of television advertising. After reeling from the recent backlash from the transgender Stallions vs. Mares advert, the betting operator brings to us their latest creation, “Chav Tranquilizer.”
It is suggested that the best thing to do with chavs is “sort them out, veterinary style” to make sure that there is a “Chav free Cheltenham for civilised people…and the Irish!” The advert depicts “chav’s” as targets, in all of their stereotypical glory. It was launched ahead of next month’s Cheltenham Festival.
The film ends with a voiceover stating, “you can enjoy a chav-free Cheltenham courtesy of Paddy Power, the classy mobile app for civilised people and the Irish”. There will probably be another outcry about this advert, especially as it flaunts the ‘class snobbery’ aspect in our faces. This of course means it’s marketing plan has worked a treat…
In a statement relating to the transgender advert, they said they were “surprised and disappointed to learn of the decision by the British TV advertising regulator along with television broadcasters to suspend our “Lady’s Day” commercial from airing in the UK.
“This decision is especially frustrating given that the commercial was already pre-approved by British television advertising clearance body Clearcast.” They also claimed that they had “received 10 letters of support from the transgender community.”
