Commercial Gaming Revenue in the US Hits Record $78 Billion in 2025

Commercial gaming revenue in the United States shattered previous records by reaching $78.7 billion in 2025, marking a 9.2% increase over the previous year. The industry delivered $18.1 billion in tax revenue, representing a 15.1% jump, while achieving growth across every major category. Commercial gaming revenue 2025 demonstrated a clear shift in market dynamics, as sports betting and online gaming significantly outpaced traditional casino revenue. Sports betting revenue surged 22.8% to $17 billion, while online gaming rose 27.6% to $10.7 billion. Traditional gaming, in contrast, generated $50.9 billion with a modest 2.3% increase. Nevada maintained its position as the largest market at $15.8 billion, followed by Pennsylvania and New Jersey in the rankings.

Commercial Gaming Revenue 2025 Breaks Records Across All Sectors

The American Gaming Association reported 2025 marked the sixth consecutive year of record-breaking performance for commercial gaming revenue. All 38 commercial gaming jurisdictions posted annual revenue increases, demonstrating widespread sector strength across state markets.

Tax contributions from each sector revealed the financial impact on state budgets. Traditional gaming operations delivered $9.00 billion in taxes, representing a 7.2% increase. Sports betting generated $2.95 billion in state tax revenue, climbing 32.4% year-over-year. iGaming contributed $2.06 billion in taxes, marking a 36.9% jump.

Americans wagered $132.58 billion on sports during 2025, an 11% rise from the previous year. Online sports betting dominated the category, capturing 96.5% of market share while expanding 22.0% annually. This growth occurred despite concerns from the AGA about prediction market platforms offering sports-related contracts outside established state regulatory frameworks.

iGaming reached a significant milestone in December, surpassing $1 billion in monthly revenue for the first time with $1.03 billion, a 22.4% increase. The achievement underscored sustained consumer engagement with legal gaming channels and demonstrated the strength of regulated frameworks, according to AGA President Bill Miller.

Which States Led the Gaming Industry in 2025?

State-level performance revealed Nevada retained its dominant position with commercial gaming revenue of $15.8 billion. Pennsylvania secured second place at $7.71 billion, while New Jersey followed with $6.98 billion. New York claimed fourth position at $5.72 billion, and Michigan rounded out the top five with $5.04 billion.

Pennsylvania generated the highest annual online casino revenue for any U.S. state, posting a 27.9% increase over 2024. The state’s iGaming operators delivered $2.20 billion in revenue, marking a 27.2% jump. Sports betting in Pennsylvania continued its upward trajectory, with operator revenue rising 18% to $478.48 million.

Nevada’s performance demonstrated regional market shifts. The Las Vegas Strip remained the country’s largest gaming market despite flat revenue. Reno/Sparks and Downtown Las Vegas showed noteworthy gains, becoming the 11th and 12th largest markets respectively. The Boulder Strip also boasted strong growth.

Sports betting markets showed New York, Illinois, New Jersey, and Ohio maintaining their positions as the top four markets from 2024 to 2025. Arizona and Massachusetts ascended two and one spot respectively, both driven by 29% year-over-year increases.

What Challenges Threaten Future Gaming Revenue Growth?

Regulatory pressures and emerging competitors present obstacles to sustained commercial gaming revenue growth. The UK government announced rate increases for Remote Gaming Duty from 21% to 40% effective April 2026, with remote betting rates rising from 15% to 25% in April 2027. These changes aim to raise over £1 billion annually but risk pushing customers toward illicit markets.

Prediction markets emerged as a significant threat to traditional sports betting channels. The AGA estimates these platforms diverted more than $397.08 million in potential sports betting tax revenues from states. Nevada experienced this shift during Super Bowl 60, generating $106.26 million in handle, the state’s lowest take in a decade. The “Bad Bunny First Song” market on Kalshi alone drew $107.29 million in trades, surpassing Nevada’s entire Super Bowl handle. Overall, prediction markets processed more than $1.03 billion in trades concerning Super Bowl 60.

Legal battles intensified as 36 state attorneys general filed an amicus brief against Kalshi’s regulatory approach in June 2025. The CFTC under Chairman Mike Selig asserted jurisdiction over prediction markets, filing friend-of-the-court briefs supporting platforms against state enforcement. Tribal gaming operations raised concerns about exclusive sports betting rights violations and revenue diversions undermining tribal self-sufficiency under IGRA.
