Craps to embarrassing for Hippodrome

So the Hippodrome in London’s Leicester Square has decided the word “craps” is rude and replaced it with “dice” so not to embarrass customers and in do so destroy what has been the name of the game which is hugely popular with Americans with its history dating back to the 11th century.

Indeed the game is believed to originate from a mixture of English and French games, called “hazard” and “crapaud”, hence where the name derived from.

It is understood that Bernard Xavier de Marigny de Mandeville a wealthy Louisianna landowner and politician brought the game over from Europe with some alterations to the game, but in essence was the same.

So a game that has nearly a millenium of history encased in its name is now embarrasing to the Hippodrome Casino, however the game would most only attract US visitors and by changing its name will certainly lose its appeal to those looking for a game of CRAPS.

Mr Simon Thomas the owner of the Hippodrome explained, “We’ve decided to bring back craps to London, which is massively popular in the USA. But some customers were uncomfortable with the name — it sounds odd in modern usage, and I understand why because it is not a pretty word even though it’s steeped in gambling tradition. So we are going with dice.”

Maybe the Hippodrome could explain to those uneducated few the history of the game which could enlighten them instead of changing a games name steeped in history.

Mr Thomas added: “There’s a lot of sniggering and smirking going on and it can cause confusion. The other night an American came in and asked the way to ‘the craps’ and one of our East European waitresses pointed him to the gents. So we’re going to be British and politically correct about it.”

Most certainly as US players walk past the Hippodrome they will keep on walking instead of going inside to play dice, as they look for a craps game.
