Denmark Blocks Prediction Market Platform Polymarket Over Licensing Violations

Danish authorities blocked access to the cryptocurrency-based prediction platform Polymarket, alongside 97 other unlicensed gambling websites. The enforcement action follows a ruling by the Court of Frederiksberg, which determined that the platform violates Denmark’s national gambling regulations by offering services without the requisite regulatory approvals. The decision mandates that domestic telecommunications providers restrict user access to the site.

The legal proceedings were initiated by the Danish Gambling Authority against the telecommunications operator Telenor. Following the court’s decision, an existing industry agreement requires all other internet service providers in the country to implement similar access restrictions. Under Danish law, operators must secure a formal license to offer betting and gambling services to consumers within the jurisdiction. The enforcement action demonstrates the government’s approach to regulating offshore digital platforms that intersect with traditional betting frameworks.

Danish Minister for Taxation Jakob Engel-Schmidt publicly supported the court’s ruling, emphasizing the necessity of regulatory compliance. “If you want to play in the Danish market, you must also play by the Danish rules,” he stated in a written comment. Beyond licensing procedures, regulatory scrutiny has also focused on the nature of specific contracts offered by the platform. Polymarket allows users to wager on geopolitical events, including military conflicts. Addressing these markets, Engel-Schmidt remarked, “We’re talking about people losing their lives. About families losing their loved ones. About wars that destroy entire societies. And then someone sits there and says, ‘What if we could bet on when it happens?’ It’s crazy.” He added, “A human life is not a lottery ticket.”

In response to the restriction, Polymarket stated that it was “disappointed” by the ruling and indicated intentions to challenge the decision through legal channels. The company characterized prediction markets as “an important innovation within the financial digital market,” asserting that the platform operates neutrally without taking a position in any market or profiting from specific outcomes. Furthermore, the utility of such platforms remains a subject of discussion. Steffen Frolund, business spokesperson for the Liberal Alliance, noted that prediction markets can serve as useful mechanisms for assessing future events.
