Craitor said he has met with Finance Minister Dwight Duncan “a number of times” over not only the casinos but gaming issues in Niagara as a whole. “I met with him about the (Fort Erie) racetrack, slots, the casinos and bingos,” Craitor said. “They all need help to continue operating.”
“We would be in opposition to having a casino in Toronto,” Niagara Falls Chamber of Commerce president Carolyn Bones said Tuesday. “The 4,200 jobs at the two casinos in Niagara Falls would be put in jeopardy.”
Likewise, the Greater Niagara Chamber of Commerce issued a news release Tuesday expressing its opposition. “Niagara has an established gaming industry,” said Kithio Mwanzia, director of policy and government relations for the Greater Niagara chamber. “From horse racing and slots to casinos, Niagara has pioneered gaming in Ontario. The report by the OLG, if acted on by the provincial government, puts the sector at considerable risk.”
On Monday, the OLG unveiled planned changes to Ontario’s gaming industry. The OLG said these changes will increase revenues to the government by $1.3 billion through the modernization of gambling in Ontario as a means to provide more than $2 billion in revenue to the provincial government’s bottom line.
