Currently online gambling is illegal in the country, but the government there are slowly trialling casinos where nationals are allowed to gamble, along with small opportunities for sports gambling.
According to authorities gamblers were depositing funds into bank accounts where they were then given online credit to gamble. The organisers of the online gambling were apparently careful to ensure those bank accounts used had limited funds so not to alert government officials.
It is reported that 12 of those arrested were more senior organisers of the online gambling business with some being foreign nationals, so far the police in Vietnam are not releasing information on those arrested.
