Kansas launches sports betting, but blocks Missouri Players

Kansas’ long-awaited legalization of sportsbooks has triggered a frustrated response from a substantial number of residents in neighbouring Missouri, angered that a sports wagering bill is yet to materialise in their native state. Many made desperate attempts to access Kansas’ new sports betting platforms within their own jurisdictions, despite this being a prohibited activity.

Regulations in the Sunflower State, whose fledgling marketplace landed last Thursday, determine that anyone can place bets with Kansas bookmakers, but these transactions must be conducted within state boundaries. Unfortunately, at least 16k Missourians ignored this ruling and tried to gain platform entry and were subsequently prevented from betting by Geo Comply solution software, the programme empowered to block external players from engaging in gambling activity.

Although most of Missouri’s neighbouring states already have sportsbook sites in operation, Kansas’ introduction into the betting industry has touched a particularly delicate nerve. This reaction is a consequence of the unique location of Kansas City, a settlement which encompasses lands from either side of the Kansas—Missouri state line. Therefore, there is now a peculiar dynamic whereby only a particular portion of the city’s near 500k population can legally enjoy sports betting. This issue is further accentuated by the fact that those able to place wagerscan clearly now do so on local NFL outfit Kansas City Chiefs, who ironically are based in a stadium situated within Missouri territory.

Unsurprisingly, the city suburbs surrounding the Chiefs’ Arrowhead Stadium was a hotspot for those looking to circumnavigate the system. Kansas’ location detection software revealed that 60% of the blocks it administered were linked to smartphones positioned in this area of Kansas City.

Despite Senator Caleb Rowden announcing that establishing a sports betting sector was a key priority in the next legislative term, many Missourians don’t hold out much hope. In May, State Senator Denny Hoskins shot down two-House Bills, which would have permitted the Show Me State’s commercial casinos to run retail and online sportsbooks.
