Kansas Legalises Sports Betting And Then Sued By Casino

Kansas on Thursday 12^th May became the 29^th state in the US to legalise sports betting but no sooner had it done so than one of the casinos benefiting from this is suing the state.

The Kansas Star Casino which is operated by Boyd Gaming under license from the state lottery till the end of 2026, the issue is the state says that sports betting will not compete in close proximity to another but Boyd Gaming takes an issue to an old greyhound race track that under the current legislation will allow for 1,000 machines which looks like a slot machine but offer fixed odds betting on racing (sports betting).

The actual race track that closed in 2007 but under historic law will allow them to operate the machines. Boyd says the machines are “indistinguishable,” and should not be allowed as it breaches the new law.

It is not expected to impede the launch of sports betting as the part of the law is separate from the main sports betting legislation, but there could be a possibility of this. It is strange as Boyd Gaming supported the sports betting bill and indeeds intends to launch the acitivity as soon as possible.

Kansas intends to use what is hoped to be $5 million a year in tax revenues to entice NFL Kansas City Chiefs to the state from its current location of Missouri.
