Macau Gross Gaming Revenue Declines 1.2% Year-on-Year in August to $2.71 Billion

Macau’s casino operators recorded a minor contraction in monthly performance for August 2026, with gross gaming revenue (GGR) slipping 1.2 percent year-on-year to $2.71 billion (approximately MOP 21.8 billion). Figures released by the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ) indicate that while absolute revenue figures remain elevated, high baseline comparisons from the previous year and shifting market dynamics contributed to the annual dip. Sequentially, the results reflect a period of revenue consolidation across the territory’s gaming and leisure market following seasonal fluctuations earlier in the summer.

Comparative Baseline and Segment Dynamics

The year-on-year decline in August 2026 follows an exceptionally strong comparison period in August 2025, when Macau generated $2.76 billion (MOP 22.15 billion) in total GGR. Industry performance throughout August 2026 highlighted distinct operational trends across different market segments:

  • Mass-Market Stability: Mass-market baccarat and electronic gaming machine operations remained the principal revenue anchor for concessionaires, accounting for the vast majority of total receipts.

  • VIP Moderation: High-roller VIP baccarat volume exhibited continued softness, maintaining a trend of reduced VIP market share observed throughout the second quarter of the year.

  • Non-Gaming Integration: Concessionaires utilized non-gaming programming, including live entertainment and sporting events, to maintain property foot traffic during the peak summer holiday travel window.

Fiscal Framework and Operator Margins

Under the current ten-year concession framework that commenced in 2023, Macau’s six licensed casino operators are required to direct substantial capital toward non-gaming amenities and foreign customer attraction. While these investments continue to broaden the tourism demographic, higher player reinvestment rates and operational expenses have placed sustained pressure on operator profit margins.

From a public finance perspective, the local government levies an effective 40 percent tax on gross gaming revenue. Despite the minor decrease in August receipts, total gaming tax collections for 2026 remain ahead of mid-year budget estimates due to strong market performance recorded during the first quarter.
