Macau June Figures Down But Hope With Hong Kong

Macau

The Macau Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ) announced the June figures for gaming in Macau showing that gross gaming revenue (GGR) fell by 37.4% compared to the previous month at which the current figures are being compared as in the previous year the figures showed a rise of 812.5% because of the closure of casinos because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Response to the figures by analysts was in line with expectations given the disruption in travel from the mainland most notably the Guangdong province which saw virus cases rise during the period and impacted on travel to Macau.

However the prospect of Hong Kong travel opening up between Macau has lifted expectations for July onwards, the need for Hong Kong players is important as it accounts for some 10% of all GGR in Macau. Talks between Hong Kong officials are ongoing and it is hoped that by the middle of July there will be travel allowed between the two.
