Parent organization, Mansion Group, announced the closure of its sports betting app was a strategic decision. The Gibraltar-based firm will now invest more time into developing its casino brands, as it sets out to increase its share of the online gaming market. The company has already declared its intention to honour any winning wagers up to the end of March, and will also credit any ante-post bet successes up to April next year. Furthermore, the MansionBet logo will remain on the façade of Bristol City’s kit until the end of the season, the Championship side who have been sponsored by the sportsbook since August 2020.
However, the ‘pull’ of focusing on its casino-based enterprises is also offset by the ‘push’ of prevailing headwinds. The competitive nature of the UK sports market space has intensified in recent years. The expansion of some of the industry’s big boys has led to the marginalization of smaller operators, with giants such as Flutter, Entain, and bet365 starting to acquire somewhat of a monopoly.
This, coupled with the ambiguity surrounding the government’s upcoming regulatory reform, has served to put overwhelming pressure on fledgling gaming organizations. This is a pattern that leading gambling analyst, Gavin Kelleher, assumes will gather pace in the next few years. Commenting on Mansion Group’s decision to discontinue its MansionBet brand, he stated,
‘I think this is a reflection of the competitiveness of the market and regulatory headwinds in the UK. We’ve seen other small operators leave the market and it’s probably going to be an ongoing trend’
The sector awaits to see the progress of Mansion Group’s gaming operations given its renewed focus in this area.
