Pennsylvania’s Gambling Revenues OutLook for 2023

Pennsylvania has seen a record number of gambling revenues for the 2022 fiscal year thanks to its ever-growing selection of gaming options. 

From traditional brick-and-mortar casinos to sports wagering, iGaming, and Video Gaming Terminals (VGTs), residents of the Keystone State can now enjoy multiple ways to gamble responsibly. We take an in depth look at how each gambling revenue contributed to the total in 2022. 

Slot Machines and Table Games Revenue 

It should be no surprise that slot machines and table games are still Pennsylvania’s staple revenue sources. Slot machine handles increased by 4.51% from 2021 to 2022, while table games saw an even more significant jump in revenue by 7.10%. The increase indicates that more people are willing to partake in these traditional forms of gambling than ever before. 

Sports Wagering, iGaming, and VGTs

Sports wagering continues to be one of the fastest growing industries in the state, with a 17.96% increase year-over-year. At the same time, online casinos saw an even bigger jump of 22.60%, while Video Gaming Terminal (VGT) revenue increased by 5.59%. 

It is easy to see why these three sources have become so popular so quickly—they provide an easy entry point into online gambling without entering a brick-and-mortar casino, which can be intimidating for some players. Plus, PA was one of the first states to legalise sports betting after federal prohibition was struck down in 2018, giving them a head start on other states regarding this particular form of entertainment. 

Currently, 15 brick-and-mortar casinos, 10 iGaming certificate holders, and 66 VGT facilities across the state for players wanting more gaming options beyond slot machines and table games.

Fantasy Contests Revenue 

While fantasy contests have been popular for years now, they experienced a drop from 2021 into 2022, with handle decreasing -23.90%. Despite this decrease in handle, fantasy contests still remained in the top five sources of total revenue for Pennsylvania’s gambling industry overall – showing their continued importance within the state’s gaming landscape and their potential for future growth.  

Awareness grows around this unique form of entertainment based on skill rather than luck or chance. Modern gamblers who have grown up with gaming prefer fantasy contests to other gambling activities that are traditional in Pennsylvania. 

Overall it looks like Pennsylvania’s gambling industry achieved impressive gains during the 2022 fiscal year due mainly to its diverse range of gaming opportunities available both online and offline – including slots and table games; sports betting; igaming; video gaming terminals; and even fantasy contest handles respectively.

With such positive gains across many different areas, PA will likely continue seeing similar increases into 2023 if current trends hold. As more people become aware of their choices regarding where and how they want to play – we can only expect more significant numbers over time.
