Sports Betting Bill Moves Forward In Canada

Sports betting on single events in Canada is moving along following the passing of the second reading in the House of Commons yesterday, and if it passes with the Justice Committee and then goes to the Senate and finally the Governor for signing it will mark a victory for its supporters.

The bill C-218 has some way to go but its sponsors believe with the US moving rapidly to legalise sports betting Canada has to do the same. Indeed many point to the huge success in New Jersey where revenues on sports betting topped $1 billion and with the state taxing revenues at 16.5% that is a lot of income into government coffer especially during a time when state incomes have been hit with the COVID-19 pandemic.
