Sportsbook Operators In Northern Territory Australia Ruling The Roost

Given that a high concentration of Aussie sports betting companies are based in Northern Territory, it’s perhaps unsurprising that the sportsbook sector enjoys considerable political lobbying power within the region’s legislative assembly. True, generating millions of dollars in revenue will always allow a considerable degree of influence, and it seems that NT’s native betting firms are taking full advantage of their elevated position.

A recent report released by media outlet, ABC News, suggests that in light of imminent changes to the local sports betting marketplace, sportsbooks conspired to suppress proposed amendments to a number of regulatory measures. Such changes were apparently put forward after an in-depth industry review was conducted in 2018, with discussions held in 2020 as to how to re-define some sector parameters.

Potential adjustments could have seen increases to ‘existing fees and taxes’, and fresh taxation streams introduced in order to boost the territory’s governmental coffers. There was also an unconfirmed claim that 20% of staffing expenditure would have had to have been ringfenced for colleagues working within Northern Territory borders. On receipt of the news of these potential changes, the region’s sports betting operators apparently threatened to leave the local industry, which would in turn have left a $AU10m ($US7.11m) taxation hole. The government unsurprisingly conceded defeat, and withdrew their proposals accordingly.

The frailty of NT’s local legislature is perhaps further illustrated by their lack of transparency. Local officials have long since been discussing the detail of the 2018 review, and are still looking to tweak some regulatory aspects. However, these talking points are rarely featured within the public realm. Some analysts believe that this comes down to having little confidence in their approach, and being fearful of public reprisals.

In fairness to law-making officials, keeping pace with an industry in exponential growth is never easy. Australia’s online gambling sector was worth 78% more in 2021 than it was in 2019, with Northern Territory presiding over a higher level of player spends than any other native region.
